Bosch Method of Engagement
There is a huge surge for digital inclusion at the moment, I am seeing on line questionnaires everywhere. Though these do have a purpose, and are a cost effect method of getting people views, It is not the answer and will not achieve a accurate picture of people's needs.
Over the last six months I have seen many such digital questionnaires, the questions themselves always seem to be written with a view of choose this or that. However there may be another way or solution that the participants may have thought of which may also be relevant. The question does not allow for the person to express there own view.
Some of these questionnaires seem to even ask about inequalities or are trying to reach out and improve services. Yet by definition of using such practises you may be missing out the views of the very people who you are trying to approach, ether due to disability, vision imparements, age, knowledge, language usage or due to poverty or other imparments.
One of the modern problems of our society seems to be loneliness, and even here the reliance of such methodologies do not assist in tackling these issues.
So what's the Bosch method of Engagment. If you're looking for a scientific proven method to add to your many such theories. This isn't the blog for you. This is something much simpler and practically based. The Bosch method is based on the novel and detective series on television startng as Hieronymus (Harry) Bosch, Titus Welliver. In the series the detective has a sign hanging on the partion wall of the desk. The sign says "get off your ass and go knock on some doors".
To simplify further to get best results just go and speak to people! Go to local groups, local minority communites, ask questions let them decide what's important and relevant, do not have preconceived ideas of what they may want or need. Simply just ask. Ask why? Ask what's important to them. Don't ask yes or no questions just let them speak, let them tell you. If you can't get out of your office for whatever reason (Covid) , phone, zoom, just speak to people.
Just as important after you've listened, tell them what you are going to do and when. If for whatever reason, even if resources are tight, tell them , explain. Involve them. Too often after responding to surveys and questionnaires people are just left to wonder what's happened? Even if you do just a report tell people how it will be followed up, who it went to and anything that's been achieved. Just like Bosch who always goes back to see those affected not leaving them wondering what happens now.
