What is it that people with disabilities really need in 2017?

It's Spetember almost 2/3 of the year gone. As usal it started as we all wish everyear, full of promise and we were all raring to go. Well for the first couple of weeks at least.... but have you taken the time and decided what’s really important and then planned how to go about it.

Without planning and thinking how will we know whether where getting anywhere? How will you measure success?

Over the years working with disabilities you see the same trends and issues over and over again. We all know what needs to be done to improve things, but getting those things actually done in the mainstream that’s another matter.

The main issues that I see in relation to disability matters is unity and coordination.  There are just too many organisations, charities, groups both private and public stepping on each other’s toes fighting for recognition and funding. Over the last 20 years as I’ve said time and time again, I has become more important than we/us. Someone really needs to take a lead get all the organisation together under one roof to speak with one voice on relevant matters that effect disabled people. Or am I wrong? Is it better to be divided, so that are voices can’t be heard over the clamour of disinterest?

I often see and get disheartened by the good that Individuals try to do? Here are just two reoccurring issues for example. One in relation to disabled parking space abuse “Want my space take my disability” and the other trying to ensure that people can get the carers they need “Carers wanted UK”. Both on Facebook trying to get people with disabilities involved in making things happen. In a recent on line petition Want my space got only three and half thousand signatures, the Care UK sight asked for members to share the page with others and only a handful did. Now is it disinterest? I think not, because everyone I speak to says how much these things are needed. Is it access to the internet? Maybe but by telling people and sharing knowledge of such sights can only be a benefit to all. You don’t need to change the world, you just need to get involved and let people know you’re not happy. This isn’t moaning this is action.

Everything that has ever truly been achieved in the world comes from unity and cooperation. People coming together. Looking around and reading posts, I know we have the skills, we have the knowledge. We just need to harmonise. The statistics speak for themselves as a joint force of 19.1% of the UK population, with 8 billion pounds of revenue we can achieve anything we want. We have to stop grumbling or looking after just our own needs and make it not about who gets the most press and recognition, let’s vow to truly work together. If we can get this done we can i really believe solve our problems.

It is really disheartening when I see blogs, posts, articles and tweets over and over again talking about the same, 5 or 6 main issues.  We all tut and mutter how dreadful it is. Is that all we are, or do we really want to make a change? If so do something get involved, don’t just slide your finger down the screen, sign the petition, write to your councillors and MP'S, share the information anyway you can. Make your dissatisfaction heard.  It’s your life take charge.

Once we come together on issues, such as benefits, accessibility, transport, and employment, as a joint force we can take charge together and make much needed changes. Let’s vow to find solutions this year and unite and get together for the benefit of all disabled people.
