If you have a Disability or like Diversity – visit Lincoln

I believe the powers that be, in the county I have called home for 25 years does itself a disservice. Over the years I see many publications from authorities, The Visit Lincoln video being the most recent that try to show the county in a good light yet fail hugely.

Look through the counties official publications and promotions and you see a white, middle class, heterosexual, able city being promoted. But Lincoln is so much much more.

The county has a vibrant mix of communities who live side by side, we don’t really have an Asian, or Chinese, or a specific area for a group of people in the whole. Lincoln is well integrated and people from all communities can be found on the streets and living in harmony next to each other. Not only by colour but by religion and even sexuality. It is truly a multicultural diverse city that has much to celebrate, look a little deeper and you too can visit a local synagogue or mosque. Be invited to Chinese festivals, Eid parties, Holi parties, celebrations of all religions and open door policies are seen everywhere. We also have a Lincolnshire pride event, which really becomes  a great family day out.

For me as a power wheelchair user, though the old city uphill in Lincoln has its issues due to age of some buildings, but even there with a little thought from local businesses things can be good or significantly improved. You will find generally access good or brilliant. For example our beautiful ancient castle even has a lift that can be used by non-ambulant people to take them to the battlements where you get a wonderful view of the cathedral. Don’t forget to look around the Magna Carter  and yes the cathedral to is accessible.

Go down the hill, and you’ll come to some really good hostelries with great food. One of my favourites, Craft has a hidden outdoor eating area which is accessible and a great place to eat in summer. There are a huge selection of good to brilliant restaurants which will meet most discernible palettes. Further on down in the main town you will find most high street shops and even some real hidden gems. Shops are generally accessible and staff friendly, who will move tables and chairs for you to accommodate your access needs. Bar Unico is such a place, run by Gino and family, another great favourite for coffee and fresh snacks.

We even have a great inland ancient port, with boats known as the Brayford. Here you’ll find a flat wheelchair friendly area overlooking the water, with the university in the background. It is filled with accessible restaurants and bars meeting all your dining and party needs.

All this surrounded by large areas of common land, again generally accessible. Views from most parts as you drive in are stunning and this is just the capital.

The county is huge and has hills (yes it does), pretty little towns and even quite hidden beaches. Oh and there's always Skeg Vegas. It really has so much to offer for all People.
