Not a Superhuman? But still a Superhero! Being Batman...
So I’m sure you’ve read, heard or seen the channel 4 superhuman advert and if you’re disabled like me you, either felt elated or it saddened you. Elated as it tries to bring a positivness to disability and a can do attitude. However on the flip side if your disabilities are severe i.e. say someone who has a debilitating progressive muscle wasting disease which changes every six months, you use a powered wheelchair, have constant care, then you don’t feel or are ever going to feel superhuman.... The Paralympics or any physical sports is just too much.
Being a superhuman means that yes you’re a human but somehow you’ve reached an improved state of being. Your super. It doesn’t necessarily make you a hero or good or better person. So why be a superhuman, why not be a super hero instead?
If
your try to attain a super hero status, then firstly it’s not just about
you it’s a concept based on not thinking about yourself at all, but putting
others first, helping others as best you can, you don’t even need powers! My
own all time favourite superhero is Batman. He doesn’t have any powers yet he's
still considered a hero. Now I know some will argue that his a billionaire and
he has gadgets, well I’m not a billionaire but I too have gadgets which get me
about. No his greatest skill is that he is the world’s greatest detective. His
skills haven’t just occurred. An event in his life occurred which gave him the
catalyst, He dedicated his life to a greater cause, one outside himself and
strove to be better to help others. Yes his an incredible athlete but his greatest
attribute is his mind, with dedication, perseverance, determination, something
which his trained himself to do, to use, even his body has been trained
and there lies the answer. The right attitude and mind-set can lead to
striving for a purposeful life. It doesn’t mean you need powers or that
you need to attain a higher physical level, or to achieve perfection, all
that it requires is you to think outside of yourself. What can you do today,
now, for someone else? It could be volunteering some of your time to others or
just giving someone who you haven’t spoken to a call, or even just smiling at
the next person you see.
There
is a hero in all of us, we can all be superheroes and make the world a better
place at the same time, not for a medal or applause, just like Batman
where a virtual mask, don’t let people see your true self, but just make a
difference to the world. You are worthy, you are important too. You don’t
need the accolade, or to go anywhere, you have a purpose, you are
important.
